Netscope: Traac Engineering for Ip Networks

چکیده
Managing large IP networks requires an understanding of the current traac ows, routing policies, and network connguration. Yet, the state-of-the-art for managing IP networks involves manual connguration of each IP router, and traac engineering based on limited measurements. The networking industry is sorely lacking in software systems that a large Internet Service Provider (ISP) can use to support traac measurement and network modeling, the underpinnings of eeective traac engineering. This paper describes the AT&T Labs NetScope, a uniied set of software tools for managing the performance of IP backbone networks. The key idea behind NetScope is to generate global views of the network, on the basis of connguration and usage data associated with the individual network elements. Having created an appropriate global view, we are able to infer and visualize the network-wide implications of local changes in traac, connguration, and control. Using NetScope, a network provider can experiment with changes in network connguration in a simulated environment, rather than the operational network. In addition, the tool provides a sound framework for additional modules for network optimization and performance debugging. We demonstrate the capabilities of the tool through an example traac-engineering exercise of locating a heavily-loaded link, identifying which traac demands ow on the link, and changing the connguration of intra-domain routing to reduce the congestion.

متن کاملDeriving Tra c Demands for Operational IP Networks: Methodology and Experience
| Engineering a large IP backbone network without an accurate, network-wide view of the traac demands is challenging. Shifts in user behavior, changes in routing policies, and failures of network elements can result in sig-niicant (and sudden) uctuations in load. In this paper, we present a model of traac demands to support traac engineering and performance debugging of large Internet Service P...

Traac engineering involves tuning a network's path-selection, link-scheduling, and buuer-management policies to the prevailing traac demands and performance requirements. EEective traac engineering requires an accurate, network-wide view of the conngura-tion of the routers. However, network operators have limited tools to aid in connguring large backbone networks. Connguring IP routers is extre...

In this paper we present tehniques to to improve the performance TCP/IP over satellite-ATM networks, and to provide minimum rate guarantees to VCs carrying TCP/IP traac. Many future systems are proposing to use ATM or ATM like technology to transport TCP/IP based data. These systems must be designed to support best eeort services, as well as enhanced services that provide minimum rate guarantee...
متن کاملAn Atm Traac Model Based on Empirical Traac Measurements
The characterization of ATM traac is very important in many aspects such as validating traac models, designing congestion control algorithms, implementing communication protocols, and developing switch architectures. In this paper, we present measurements of applications obtained from the High-Speed Networking and Performance Lab (HSNP) at Michigan State University. These applications are selec...
